The Center of the Universe

from Sentinels by Mally Smith

lyrics

I can hear everything here,
The footsteps of some unknown creature,
The cry of a new mother homeward bound.

The rush of wind as it dances with the trees.
It's all I can do not to weep.

The birch trees stand tall,
Slender columns amidst the green.
Sentinels of this sacred ground.

Time has etched her secrets on their silver white skin.
It's all I can do not to sing.

Here is where I come
When I cannot find my home,
Stuck between flight and solid ground.

But oh to be the moth with her circular ascent,
Instinct guides her as she rises to meet her death.

They say the sun is setting,
Yet it is I who move around her.
She is constant, I am change.

My feet on the ground, my head tilts towards the sky
As the light around me begins to fade.
